What Is OpenClaw?
Last updated: February 4, 2026
OpenClaw is an open-source, self-hosted AI assistant designed to work like a full-time executive assistant — triaging email, managing calendars, drafting replies, sending messages, and automating workflows across your tools.
Unlike ChatGPT or Claude Desktop, OpenClaw isn't a chat window you open when you need something. It's an always-on agent that works in the background — checking your inbox, scheduling meetings, and taking action without you asking.
Origin & background
OpenClaw was created by Peter Steinberger, founder of PSPDFKit (now Nutrient), who scaled the company to $100M+ ARR with 250+ employees. He built a personal AI assistant for himself, then open-sourced it.
Originally called Clawdbot, then Moltbot, it was renamed to OpenClaw. The project has earned 150,000+ GitHub stars and is one of the fastest-growing open-source projects.
Core capabilities
Email triage
Reads incoming mail, labels and prioritizes messages, drafts replies, sends with approval.
Calendar management
Schedules meetings, resolves conflicts, proposes times to contacts, blocks focus time.
Proactive briefings
Morning summaries with agenda, flagged emails, items needing attention.
Messaging integration
Works with Slack, iMessage, WhatsApp, and other platforms.
Custom workflows
Automates expense reminders, weekly summaries, follow-ups, document prep.
Technical architecture
Central process managing email, calendar, and messaging connections.
Execution engine processing events and deploying actions using LLM reasoning.
Modular, self-contained units (schedule meeting, draft reply, summarize thread).
Persistent knowledge base storing preferences, contacts, and interaction history.
Only to Anthropic’s Claude API and connected services (Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack).
Hardware & requirements
Recommended setup
- •Mac Mini M4 Pro (24/7 operation, minimal power)
- •Alternative: Any Mac with Apple Silicon or Linux machine
- •Anthropic API key for Claude access
- •Typical API costs: $50–$200/month
- •Stable internet connection
- •Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 credentials
- •Slack workspace access (optional)

Security considerations
Running an AI agent with access to your email and calendar is inherently sensitive. This isn't a risk-free tool.
Research from Cisco identified susceptibility to prompt injection attacks through malicious email content. Proper deployment includes:
- •Audit trails for action review
- •Access controls limiting agent capabilities
- •Network isolation restricting system reach
- •Regular security patches
Professional deployment is recommended for proper security configuration.
Recognition & press
Featured in MacStories, Fast Company, and CNBC. Covered by IBM's research team. Active GitHub and Discord communities with regular releases.
“The most impressive open-source AI agent project.”
“Most AI products are toys. This one does real work.”
Who it's for
Founders and executives
Chiefs of staff
Operational leaders
Companies with 4–50 employees
Ideal for those processing 100+ daily emails with complex calendars. Not suitable for those uncomfortable with AI accessing email, lacking dedicated hardware, or seeking a simple chat interface.
Setup implementation
Typical deployment takes 5\u20138 hours with same-day go-live. Included services:
- •VPS or Mac Mini provisioning

- •Composio OAuth middleware setup
- •Email and calendar integration
- •Up to 3 workflows
- •Documentation
- •14-day hypercare support
Post-deployment: dedicated Slack Connect channel for ongoing support.
